Hologram microcosm vs infinite jets1/1/2023 This makes me think that it’s gotta be astounding with a good analog synth (I’d love to spend some time with a Sirin or some other thick monophonic synth, would be really cool). Third, it’s not crazy about complex chords - it seems to really like seeing a clear note. Second, most of the presets take a cycle to wake up, so playing 100% wet is very hard to time, much more so than say playing into the Meris pedals at 100% wet. Obviously this kind of this is hyper-subjective. #HOLOGRAM MICROCOSM VS INFINITE JETS HOW TO#I don’t really know how to describe it, but the difference in tone between Microcosm and Ct5 is pretty stark, at least to my particular ears in this particular room. Not only quiet, it’s sort of thin sounding. On top of that you have 16 slots (what we’d normally call presets, in the Strymon/Meris sense) to save your favorite customizations, and each one of those can have loops stored in it!? So for every preset, you can tweak the intensity of the effect, the shape of the envelope, the density of the repeats, whether it’s in reverse or not, how much reverb to add to it, whether there’s any modulation, how intense the modulation is, etc. So with Mosaic (a family friendly take on Ct5 Mode 1), one preset does octave up loops, one octave down, one both, etc. Each algorithm has four ‘presets’ that are different flavors of the same effect. Most of the others are a bit more finicky, but I don’t thing any of them are useless. The Mosaic, Haze, Tunnel, and Blocks presets are all stunning and really fun to just play with. Microcosm just sounds beautiful out the gate. This would be in contrast to something like the Count to 5, which is amazing, but can sometimes sound like you got hit by the poisoned blowgun in Young Sherlock Holmes it can be out of control and noisy until you dial in the right quantization, etc. It’s one of the most plug-in-and-get-lost pedals I’ve ever played, and generally speaking, just sounds great. So, about the Microcosm! It’s fucking insane! It’s not perfect, and has some pretty significant flaws, but it’s very, very cool. The signal is pretty attenuated by the Modele B, which is typically just left with all dials at noon. A bit scooped, super fat, just a faint bit of hair from the amp. Primary guitar is a custom Mustang-ish thing, usually boosted by the Lehle so it’s a bit more like a giant humbucker than a typical Mustang, going into a Twin, padded input on normal channel, been really enjoying the 6/6/6/6 setting lately. So right now, I’m going guitar > Lehle volume > Ct5 > Halberd > Microcosm > Shallow Water > Fuck > Accountant > Ditto > Modele B > amp. Let me go over the current state of the signal path, and then I’ll try and give my review of Microcosm. That’s not impossible, but I can’t bring myself to part with the end of chain looper, and feeding Microcosm with Ct5 is just maniacal amounts of fun, and is somehow far more useful and musical than I expected. I was originally fantasizing about it replacing my Ditto, Ct5, and both Meris pedals. I’ve been kinda agonizing over it since it arrived a couple weeks ago. Either it could replace a bunch of pedals and I’d save some money, or I’d be able to sell it nearly instantly and recoup what I paid if it didn’t work out. Chatting with another gearhead who was selling their Fabrikat to get a Microcosm led me to check it out, and after seeing that there were only 5 left for the preorder I jumped on it, thinking that there was no way I could lose on this one. So I came to Microcosm after drooling at videos of the Pladask Fabrikat. Per my last NPD, I’ve been trying to get my hands on the Pladask Elektrisk Draume and Tåken for a dang long while and they’re super hard to get! I filled the hole in my soul with the remarkable Mercury7 and Polymoon from Meris, but then somebody tipped me off to the existence of the new weirdo, magical, extremely deep design from Hologram: enter Microcosm. So I didn’t expect to do another NPD for a while, but eh, it’s the end of the world, so what the hell.
